A world in flags

A flag is a strange thing. “Just” a piece of fabric, yet a powerful symbol. People march into battle behind one, or feel at home when they see their own flying.

For A World in Flags, I designed 100 flags for countries that do not exist, yet somehow feel familiar. Thirty became actual flags, which I exhibit from time to time—preferably somewhere windy. The project invites us to explore how a piece of fabric can carry a sense of identity, belonging and division.
