On Watch

For Op wacht (On Watch), I took 100 photographs of men waiting outside shops. I was fascinated by the waiting itself: the postures, the expressions, the way someone occupies a moment in which there is nothing to do.

The photographs often make people laugh. Others feel a little sorry for the men. But the longer I worked on the series, the more tenderness I felt towards them. I began to see their waiting as a quiet expression of affection. They were waiting for someone worth waiting for.

I brought 15 of my favourite photographs together in a small book.
